STORYTELLER
Bahadır Karasu is a Turkish filmmaker, director and editor whose relationship with cinema began long before the arrival of generative AI. His work has developed through more than a decade of independent filmmaking, directing, editing and post-production, shaped by a strong interest in atmosphere, visual rhythm, psychological tension and unconventional forms of storytelling.
He began making independent films in the late 2000s and went on to establish Pirana Film in 2012, working across production and post-production while continuing to develop his own films. His early work was rooted in independent and experimental cinema, often exploring isolation, identity, perception and the darker corners of human experience.
His filmography includes the experimental short Echo (2013), Un Pueblo Donde Dios No Existe (2015), and Nyctophilia (2017). His films have been screened and selected at international film festivals, while his professional career has expanded across directing, cinematography, editing, commercial filmmaking and post-production.
Editing has remained at the center of his approach to cinema. Rather than treating it simply as a technical stage of production, Karasu sees editing as the point where images acquire memory, rhythm and meaning where a collection of shots finally becomes a film. Years spent working with conventional cameras, physical productions, actors and traditional post-production continue to define the visual language behind his work today.
With the emergence of generative filmmaking, Karasu began incorporating artificial intelligence into that existing cinematic practice. AI did not replace his previous process; it expanded it. Image generation, synthetic motion and generative tools became additional instruments alongside directing, editing, sound design, cinematography and conventional post-production.
For Karasu, the technology is secondary to the film itself. Tools change. Cameras change. Production methods change. The fundamental language of cinema composition, performance, rhythm, sound, emotion and story does not.
